Embroidery

"I was embroidering today, and my fever had just broken so I was sweating and my fingers were moist and I slipped and poked myself good. But it didn't bleed."

Quick (for an old guy)

I did some multiplication tonight quickly enough to impress Kate. She did a bit of a double take and said, with all sincerity, "You're quick with the brain."

Brain Food

End of year testing today. Kate did great, of course. Needs work in spelling, math-speed and pencil gripping. For her special dinner, she requested salad bar at Ruby Tuesday's.

Opera Improv

Kate is positively giddy about the trip. She started singing sometime before I got home and shows no signs of stopping. It's primarily a running improved opera...which actually isn't all that different from normal. But there has been some composition as well -- in particular a song called "Wild Child" -- a wistful mourn for conservation.

Catching Waves

Today we learned to catch waves. Walking back to the compartment Kate was listing all things she learned -- how to walk out into the waves, how to use your back to shield yourself from the breakers, how to pick out a good one, position yourself, paddle and ride. Kate's tolerance for spray in the face increased dramatically. She's rockin' the pink life-preserver-shaped floaty and at one point the leading edge submerged, causing a face-first dive in. She simply pushed off the bottom and came up smiling. She wanted to go again and again -- maybe three hours total with breaks for running on sand, sharing gnarly surfer stories and meeting some of the other people on the beach.

beach life

Up at 6:17am, eager to go for a walk on the beach. Kate saw dolphins in the sound today, and is consumed by a jigsaw puzzle. Romeo and Juliet, two hermit crabs, were captured, then heavily researched and attended to.

The Blues

Esther and Kate were both being stubborn about their ideas for what to do, neither giving in to the other. So I sent Esther to her room to ponder her selfishness. kate, meanwhile, felt punished since her playmate was unavailable. She hid behind the chair in our living room, and when Isaac asked her why she was there, she said she had the blues.

"What's the blues?" Isaac asked.
"Take the unfairness and the sadness of a time out and double it, and you've got the blues." Kate responded.

Check up this morning in Chapel Hill. Not much sleep last night, but lots of good news today. Afterwards they made the pilgrimage to Build-a-Bear to further outfit Lucy Bunny. Kate had a gift card from the cookie sale. Kate told me the story of the trip to the mall, how hot it had been, how far they walked, and that they were riding the escalator up to the store when she realized her gift card was still in the car.

"I looked up at Mom with sad eyes and told her. And she looked down at me with serious, tired, thinking eyes."

(I believe Mom spotted her the cash.)
